Welcome to the New Mexico Simon Scholars Program
At the New Mexico Simon Scholars Program, we believe every motivated student deserves the chance to dream big – and achieve those dreams. Our mission is to support academically driven, under-resourced students from Santa Fe and Albuquerque as they prepare for, apply to, and ultimately succeed in college.
We know that potential is everywhere, but opportunity isn’t always equally available, especially for the many first-generation high school students in our program. That’s where we come in – providing resources, guidance, and a community of support that is there for each student on their journey to higher education and beyond.
What We Do
“Going to college” means more than just filling out an application. It’s understanding terms like FAFSA and credit hours, finding the right campus fit, and learning how to manage everything from deadlines to dorm life. For students and families new to the process, this can feel overwhelming.
The New Mexico Simon Scholars Program is here to help make it all more manageable. Beginning the summer before junior year, our Scholars start learning the unique vocabulary and structure of higher education. We help them explore colleges, understand financial aid, and identify the best academic and personal fit for their goals.
Through retreats, workshops, tutoring, and one-on-one support, Scholars build confidence, community, and the skills to thrive – both in high school and college.
Our High School Program: Building A Foundation for Success
During junior and senior year, our Scholars receive individualized academic and college guidance. This includes:
- Weekly tutoring tailored to each student’s needs
- SAT preparation and college essay support
- Help with college and scholarship applications
- FAFSA and financial aid guidance
- A personal laptop to support their studies
We also focus on personal growth. Through team-building activities and a variety of workshops, Scholars reflect and learn more about who they are, what they care about, and what kind of future they want to build.
Our College Program: Supporting Scholars in their Dream
Once in college, the Simon Scholars community remains a steady source of support. We offer scholarships, regular check-ins, and a network of mentors and peers who understand the challenges of being a first-generation student.
Our Scholars attend colleges and universities across the country, each chosen for its academic fit, campus culture, and affordability. The Program continues to assist them for up to five years, offering encouragement, problem-solving help, and opportunities to connect with other Scholars.
Several partner universities also provide special programming, just for New Mexico Simon Scholars – ensuring they have the tools and connections to succeed in higher education and in life.
Bridging the Gap While Building the Future
The New Mexico Simon Scholars Program bridges the gap between potential and opportunity. We’re here to help students not only get to college – but to thrive there.
By empowering bright, resilient young students with the resources and relationships they need, we help them not only achieve their goals, but inspire their families to dream bigger, and to shine brighter in their communities.
If you’re a student ready to make your dreams happen, a parent looking for support, an educator seeking opportunities for your students, or a donor hoping to make a difference – welcome. You’re all part of our story, too.
